The UNITED REPUBLIC OF TANZANIA  (URT) joined the AFRA agreement in 1991 and ever since it has participated and benefited directly from nine AFRA projects; and indirectly from the project on project formulation.

Under the nine projects the URT received   Expert services; laboratory  equipment and consumables and   staff attended training courses  workshops and seminars organized as project activities.  On the other  hand, the URT contributed in kind for logistic support and cash as operational expenses worth about US $  60,000 to enable or facilitate the implementation of project activities. In the next projects  cycle starting 2004 the country will in addition to continuingprojects, participate in new projects most of which are geared to consolidate the already established capabilities and enhance income generation for future self reliant and sustainable operation of national activities. As a result of these IAEA   and  Government inputs, there have  been noticeable achievements for the nine projects whose impacthas been significant.  Further to this, some major training of meeting events at the National Level were organized very successfully. The United Republic  of Tanzania is indebted to AFRA for the valuable co-operation.  The URT will therefore give enough effort to curb the weaknesses for maximum application of nuclear technology to facilitate socio-economic development. The strengths that exist will be the stepping-stone towards this endeavor

Sectoral science and technology policies

The national science and technology  policy attempts to identify priority areas of research and development, which have  potential for contributing to a rapid growth in key sectors of the economy and in those fields where Tanzania enjoys a comparative advantage. The following  sectors are specified: Food and  agriculture; Industry; Energy; Natural  resources; Environment; Health, Sanitation and population planning;Transport and communication

Promotion and Co-ordination of Nuclear Technology

The National Radiation Commission  (NRC) is responsible for the Co-ordination and       regular monitoring of the rate of implementation of about 12 National projects,                 which uses nuclear techniques for research and development. These projects are supported by the IAEA and are in the fields of Health, Research, Mining, Industry, Hydrology and Water Resources Development.
The Commission is also responsible for liaising  with the IAEA on other possible areas where nuclear technology could be applied to accelerate  the development and welfare of the people of Tanzania.
The Commission is also involved in the co-ordination of Regional projects, which are being implemented under the African Regional Co-operative Agreement for Research,    Development and Training Related to Nuclear  Technology (AFRA). This arrangement provides a framework for African member states to intensify  their collaboration through programmes and projects focused on specific shared needs of its members.

The Tanzania Development Vision 2025

The Vision identifies four main impediments to the realization of Tanzania's development goals: a donor dependency syndrome and a dependent and defeatist developmental      mindset; a weak and low capacity for economic  management; failures in good governance and in  the organization of production and an ineffective implementation syndrome. Targets for 2025 were defined as: high quality of livelihood; good governance through the rule of law and a strong and competitive economy. Education is seen as a  strategic change agent for mindset transformation and for the creation of a well educated nation. The education system needs to be restructured and transformed qualitatively with a focus on promoting creativity and problem solving.
